What prompted the study of Italian in the Southern Netherlands during the 16th century? And what educational tools were employed in this venture? By exploring the publishing journey of Noël de Berlaimont's Colloquia et dictionariolum, this lecture attempts to unearth the remnants of Italian language instruction in the region. After exploring the dissemination of this manual in Dutch-speaking locales, particularly the cities of Antwerp and Leuven, attention is directed towards an edition produced in the French-speaking city of Liège in 1589. Liège, a city where cultural policies and the embrace of foreign languages and cultures held significant sway.
